  • Hobbies

So I need a hobby. Something that I can work on as much or as little as I choose. Something that's not too expensive... something that I enjoy... something I can do at home... something that doesn't take up too much space.

I asked on facebook what my hobby should be and I got a few thoughts. Sally gave me some questions that I should think through when deciding my new hobby (or hobbies)...

    inside or outdoors: Indoors
with people or solo: Individual, but can be done with others (not dependent on having others to do it)
    tactile or other: Ummm... either
intellectual or not: same here... either
    active, sedentary: probably sedentary
short term or long term: long term

I've actually always wanted to make furniture. Tables, rocking chairs, entertainment centers, etc. I'd love to do all kinds of woodwork. But living in LA, the land of apartments and unaffordable homes I don't have the space to do it. Plus, I would need some sort of tools and stuff (lots to invest in when you don't have a space to put it).

So... based on my answers, what sounds good?

  • Cooking hates me...

I'm pretty sure. I really do try to cook... I follow all the directions to a "T" but for some reason it just doesn't turn out. So maybe the problem tonight was that it was supposed to cook in the crock pot for 8 hours, but unfortunately as a working woman I am away from the home for more than 8 hours. So that's understandable... but what about all the other times?

Suggestions? Advice? Do I just have to keep trying until I get the hang of it? Does cooking know that I don't like it so it's just trying to get back at me?

  • Another year, another chance to be a better blogger. This is not a new years resolution... but something I think I should try to do regardless of the date. I think that my writing ability is a muscle and if I don't use it, it becomes weak, rigid and 'out of shape'.
So bear with me, who ever might still look at this page. It'll be sporadic and rough, but I'm hoping to get my fluency back at blogging.

  • Fully blessed...

I started a new job the beginning of this year. Not sure if I mentioned too much about it... but basically I'm an executive/personal assistant to a lady. I work out of her home in Bel Air. Her and her husband have three kids. There is a live-in nanny and cook and a driver comes daily.

Things have been really good. But really busy too. Before starting I thought there was no way that someone could fill up 40+ hours of my time every week... but I'm constantly amazed at how much there is to do!

Anyways... she's taking 40 of her friends and family on a private yacht through the Greek Islands this summer. I'm not sure if I am going or not. We'll figure that out when the time gets closer. She asked me a few weeks ago if I'd be willing to go out to Greece soon and checked everything out. She's a little nervous that things will fall through with this chartered yacht and then her and everyone else (kids and all) will be stranded in Greece, during the busy season.

Then she said, "Why doesn't your husband go with you?"!! So, in one week from today (next Monday, March 31), Duke and I are leaving early in the morning to fly out to Greece! We'll spend about 8 days there... in Athens and a few of the islands (Mykonos, Paros and Santorini). I have been before (not to Santorini or Paros though), but Duke hasn't, so we're both really excited.

It's such a blessing. It's like a second honeymoon for us And I'll be paid to go... to check out the yacht, the hotels, the tour guides, the activities and then to explore and see what else there is. I plan on doing a really good job

So that's life right now. Duke and I realize that we are extremely lucky! And I'll be sure to post some of the best pictures (although I'm sure they'll all be fantastic!)

  • Sweet, sweet rain. We need it so badly. It has been raining on and off for the past week almost. I like it. It's such a nice change.
Who ever said "It never rains in Southern California" was a liar. I hope the fire damaged areas will be ok!

  • As of 6:30 this evening I am no longer an employee of the International Medical Corps. It was hard leaving my friends that I've been with for a while. I became really close to some of my co-workers... but I know we're still going to hang out (just not daily like before).

On Friday, I will begin working as an Executive Assistant in Bel Air. I'm really excited about it. Everything has fallen together perfectly. I really think its a path I should be taking.

I'll update you all on how it goes!

  • I have been meaning to write this for a week... but for some reason or another have put it off until now.

On Saturday (Dec. 1), Duke and I joined some friends and went down to Mexico to buy shoes for orphans. We left at about 7:30 in the morning and drove down past Ensenada to the orphanage. There we hung out with the kids, and they performed a Christmas show that they had put together.

We took all the girls (about 50) into town and got them shoes, underwear, bras, scarves, and hats. Another group was coming the next week to take the boys into town.

Back at the orphanage we had the best dinner ever! We helped in cutting up different things for dinner. Carne asada, homemade tortilla's, pico de gallo, salad with feta. It was all just so, so, so delicious. I'm not a big foodie and I never overeat, but for the first time in my life, I actually ate so much that I was in pain! I could feel my stomach stretching.

It was a really cool time. We were exhausted driving home at 1am, but it was all worth it. The kids were so happy. They viewed it as a big family. Older ones came back to visit too.

This trip is a Christmas tradition, but perhaps we'll have to travel down again before Christmas to say hi.

  • Back to real life. Traffic wasn't bad at all on the day before Thanksgiving once we got out of LA (in LA though it was a nightmare). We spent 2 days up in Sac... then drove down the CA coast to San Luis Obispo where we stayed in a rented house with two couples from our small group. Good times. I recommend driving down the coast... it's windy and lining the ocean and beautiful.
